Espoo datacenter project updates
Datacenters provide the physical infrastructure for the technology we depend on at work and in our personal lives. Whenever you open an app on your phone, join a virtual classroom or meeting, snap and save photos, or play a game with your friends online, you are using a datacenter. Local businesses, government, hospitals, and schools rely on datacenters every day to deliver you goods and services.
Join us on October 10 for an information session on the construction of the Microsoft Espoo datacenter project
The project for construction of Microsoft’s Espoo datacenter has begun and we invite you to come and hear about the current status of the project from our team of project managers. During this information session, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the Espoo datacenter and our commitment to working with the Espoo community. Our general contractor Winthrop will run through its plans for the coming months and take any questions you may have.

Microsoft Espoo datacenter earth works are starting the week of 16 September
Winthrop Technologies plans to begin construction of Microsoft’s Hepokorpi data center project on 16/09/24. They will establish a site office and begin the clearing and demarcation of the work area.
Construction will begin with earthworks to prepare the site, the estimated duration of which is September 2024 through early 2026. Work will begin on the north side of the plot, next to Hepokuja and Puotismäentie.
Regular working hours will be Mon-Fri 7.00-20.00 and Sat 7.30-17.00. Any noise causing work will be performed in compliance with local regulations.
Winthrop Technologies will work directly with nearby residents to notify them of noisy works.
Preliminary construction schedule for autumn 2024:
- September: Site Set-Up (Mainly Excavators) and tree felling.
- October: Soil stabilisation
- November: Soil stabilisation, drilling, blasting and crushing
- December: Soil stabilisation, drilling, blasting, crushing and piling
Site traffic will run along Hepokorventie.
We are working to mitigate traffic concerns for the work site. Traffic on the plot will be driven along Hepokorventie, and the City of Espoo supports demarcating a separate lane from the edge of Paciuksentie for pedestrians and cyclists.

EIA public presentations for the Finland datacenter sites have been completed
As a part of the Environmental Impact Assessment, Microsoft’s experts held public presentation in each of the three datacenter sites: Espoo in May 2023, Vihti in June 2023 and Kirkkonummi in August 2023. The public presentations have now been completed.
In all three public presentations, Microsoft gave an overview of the projects, presented the EIA Scoping Document and answered questions. Thank you for all who participated in the events and contributed and to everyone who gave an input to the EIA process.
The Environmental Impact Assessment Procedure is currently ongoing and a public presentation of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report for each site will be held next year.
