Donnacona datacentre construction update

Microsoft began the first phase of construction of the Donnacona datacentre in February, 2024. The datacentre construction site is located in the Portneuf County of Quebec, Canada.

Why datacentres are needed

Datacentres provide the physical infrastructure for the technology we depend on at work and in our personal lives. Whenever you open an app on your phone, join a virtual classroom or meeting, snap and save photos, or play a game with your friends online, you are using a datacentre. Local businesses, government, hospitals, and schools rely on datacentres every day to deliver goods and services to you.

Construction timeline

November 2024

Over the next few weeks, generators will be delivered to the Donnacona datacentre site. These shipments will take place in convoys, as the equipment transported is larger than regular equipment.  These transport operations are being carried out in compliance with all the rules laid down by the competent authorities and will have no impact on traffic or on local residents and businesses.

August 2024

Superstructure work began in June 2024 and is expected to be completed in mid-September 2024.

February 2024

Datacentre construction began on February 12, 2024 and the general contractor has prepared the site for construction; tree cutting, demolition, fencing, and site grading. The next phase is foundation work and other excavation activities. We anticipate that construction will be completed near the end of 2025. Construction completion of the datacentre buildings does not indicate operability.

We will keep neighbors informed in advance of construction work and perform work at less disruptive times when possible (after hours in industrial areas and during daytime hours in residential areas). Additionally, our general contractor will use water trucks to mitigate dust.
