Microsoft Datacenter Campus Middenmeer Development

Datacenters are the physical infrastructure for the technology we depend on in our work and daily lives. From virtual classes to storing photos or playing an online game, virtually every digital activity uses a datacenter. Local businesses, government, hospitals, and schools rely on datacenters every day to provide you with goods and services.

First trees planted at Agriport Middenmeer
On 17 February, a new step was taken at Agriport Middenmeer in the development of our Microsoft datacenter campus. On plot B, the first trees have been planted as the beginning of the landscaping for the expansion.
The further development of the campus in Middenmeer requires not only a digital infrastructure that is reliable and future-proof, but also careful integration into the local environment. That is why the decision was made to start with greening, even before construction begins.
“It is important that we show we are listening to the community and acting on the feedback we receive from the very beginning,” says Nienke Ris, Datacentre Community Affairs Director EMEA at Microsoft. “This is something visible—a tree. You can see that we have started.”
Greening as a starting point
With the planting of the first trees, the landscaping of the site has been set in motion in a tangible way. This planting marks the beginning of a broader approach focused on spatial quality and strengthening the local ecosystem.
By investing in greenery at this early stage, a foundation is laid for an expansion in which development and the environment are brought into balance.
“Landscaping is of great importance here,” says Robert Leever, alderman of Hollands Kroon. “With this planting, it becomes clear that the expansion is being carefully integrated and contributes to the overall quality of the area.”
Working together on the area
Representatives of Agriport, the landscape architect, the municipality of Hollands Kroon, and Microsoft were present at the tree planting. This demonstrated that the further development of the area is widely supported.

January 2026
On December 3, 2025, a well-attended information evening about the planned expansion of the Datacenter Campus was held at the Meerhoeve in Middenmeer. In an accessible and informal setting, Microsoft employees and partners engaged in discussions with local residents and other interested parties from the region.
Visitors browsed six themed booths, where specialists from Microsoft and partners provided information on a wide range of topics: from construction plans and traffic to sustainability, employment, and collaboration with the region. Many visitors seized the opportunity to share their concerns, contribute ideas, or simply gain more insight into what the campus expansion means for their immediate surroundings. The discussions were open and constructive, precisely the intent of the evening.
The information evening is part of Microsoft’s broader commitment to transparent communication and collaboration with the local community.

September 2025
On 10 September 2025 Microsoft announced the next phase in the development of the datacenter campus in Middenmeer, on the west side of the A7.
The new phase will be realized in close cooperation with the municipality of Hollands Kroon, local organizations, and the community. Landscape integration is central to this. The design takes into account the character of the open polder landscape and is tailored to the immediate surroundings.
Microsoft has opted for openness from the start of the new phase. We organize information meetings for residents in which we explain our plans, answer questions, and discuss what is going on. More information about these meetings will follow soon.
