The Community College System of Virginia and Microsoft are working together to provide students with a pathway into technology careers. The NOVA Engineering Technology Career Scholars Program is a one-year training program designed to prepare students for in-demand careers in datacenter operations and other critical infrastructure career paths. Microsoft joined NOVA as an industry partner for the program’s datacenter operations track, providing financial scholarships and internship opportunities for students . In recognition of this investment, the Community College System of Virginia honored Microsoft with the 19th Annual Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy.

Datacenter operations technicians are in high demand in Northern Virginia due to the growing number of datacenters located in this strategically important region. The NOVA Engineering Technology Career Scholars Program provides focused skills training to help high school graduates in the community access these high-paying careers. The program trains students in the specialized electrical, mechanical, and HVAC skills they need to work in high-demand datacenter support roles such as critical environment technician. On completion of the program, students can apply for an internship in the local Microsoft datacenter.

Together, North Virginia Community College and Microsoft are helping Northern Virginians access the growing tech sector in their region. Celebrating the impact of the partnership, Dr. Anne M. Kress, Virginia Community College President, observed: “Microsoft is helping [NOVA students] gain the skills needed for in-demand, sustaining-wage careers and building the region’s future workforce. This program is truly transforming the lives of our students.”

Microsoft understands both the financial challenges community college students face and their amazing potential to strengthen the talent pipeline. By providing stipends and work opportunities for NOVA students, Microsoft is helping them gain the skills needed for in-demand, sustaining-wage careers and building the region’s future workforce. The program is truly transforming the lives of our students—thank you, Microsoft!
