Person County datacenter project

Microsoft is planning on building a datacenter in greater Person County.
Why datacenters are needed
Datacenters provide the physical infrastructure for the technology we depend on at work and in our personal lives. Whenever you open an app on your phone, join a virtual classroom or meeting, snap and save photos, or play a game with your friends online, you are using a datacenter. Local businesses, government, hospitals, and schools rely on datacenters every day to deliver goods and services to you.
Investing in cloud infrastructure in North Carolina supports long-term digital growth and helps ensure that essential online services remain reliable and accessible.
April 2026: Development update
We are in the planning phase of the datacenter project, with early site preparation underway. You may notice soil sampling activities, surveying, and with road work related to the permanent closure of Country Club Road expected until late summer 2026.
Our new datacenters in Person County are expected to reduce water use by relying on air‑cooled chiller systems rather than traditional water‑intensive cooling methods.
We work to minimize impacts wherever possible and invest in the communities in which we operate. We will continue to share updates as the project progresses.
Staying connected
We are committed to being a good neighbor and keeping the community informed. See examples of how we have been working with communities across the United States.
We will keep the community up to date via our North Carolina page on the Microsoft in Your Community blog.
