Markham Construction Update

Microsoft began construction of the first phase of development of the Markham datacentre in May 2024. The datacentre construction site is located in the City of Markham, Ontario, Canada.

Why datacentres are needed

Datacentres provide the infrastructure behind everyday technology. When you open an app, join a virtual meeting, save photos, or play online games, you’re using a datacentre. Local businesses, hospitals, governments, and schools also rely on them to deliver essential services. Datacentres are a key economic driver, creating jobs and helping businesses across the region innovate, compete, and grow.

Construction timeline

The first phase of development of the datacentre began on May 8, 2024. The general contractor has prepared the site for construction, including demolition, fencing, and site grading. Construction of the datacentre building is expected to begin in late 2026 following completion of site preparation and the start of foundation work. Microsoft will share additional information about the second building with neighbours in the fall of 2026.

Staying connected

General contractor information for the construction of the datacentre building will be provided once a contract is finalized.
