Expanding access to nutritious food in San Antonio

Access to nutritious food is a basic need, yet many families across South Texas continue to face food insecurity. For more than four decades, the San Antonio Food Bank has worked to ensure that children, seniors, veterans, and families throughout its 29-county service area have access to the food and resources they need to thrive.
Founded in 1980, the San Antonio Food Bank now serves approximately 100,000 individuals each week. While addressing immediate hunger remains its primary focus, the organization also provides education, workforce support, nutrition resources, and assistance programs designed to help individuals and families build long-term stability.
Meeting neighbors where they are
The Food Bank has collaborated with Microsoft to reach more households facing food insecurity across San Antonio and Medina County. One example is through supporting the Garcia Street Urban Farm, a 4.1-acre farm located on San Antonio’s East Side. Situated within a USDA-designated food desert, the Garcia Street Urban Farm serves as a food production, education, and volunteer hub. The site provides fresh produce, promotes environmental sustainability, and creates opportunities for community engagement and urban agriculture learning.
Turning service into community impact
Microsoft employees have also volunteered alongside San Antonio Food Bank staff at food distribution and community service events. For example, on September 25, 2026, volunteers from the Military at Microsoft San Antonio chapter joined the Food Bank to support that mission through a day of hands-on service. Together, volunteers packaged food and prepared shipments that will help provide meals to thousands of people across the region.
Military service members understand the importance of supporting those around them. That spirit of service was on display as Military at Microsoft volunteers worked alongside Food Bank staff to package and prepare food for distribution. In just this one event, the volunteers filled 22 pallets with 1,047 boxes of food prepared and packaged for distribution. The effort would provide 26,803 meals for community members.
A broader community commitment
Addressing hunger requires ongoing collaboration among nonprofit organizations, volunteers, community leaders, and local partners. Through its network of programs and services, the San Antonio Food Bank continues to deliver resources that help communities meet today’s needs while preparing for tomorrow’s opportunities.
The San Antonio Food Bank’s work reflects a community priority that extends beyond any single event—or organization. By supporting the organization’s local outreach and pairing financial support with employee volunteerism, Microsoft is contributing to an established broad effort for healthier, more resilient communities across San Antonio.
