Building children’s technology skills with fun and creativity in Denmark
Coding Pirates is a Danish nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the IT and creative skills of kids and teenagers through club activities and mentorship from IT professionals. Unlike other similar technology programs, Coding Pirates focuses on a “fun and leisure” approach to IT skills, offering events and activities based on play for kids aged 7–17. It harnesses the expertise of IT professionals, educators, and enthusiasts to foster a passion for technology and creativity among the young.
Club nights offer several different styles of activities for children, including projects and workshops with assisted adult help and teaching nights led by technology professionals.
Through investments from Microsoft, the organization established new Coding Pirates clubs in Roskilde to provide kids with weekly technology exploration. Coding Pirates also continually fosters youth-led communication about science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) in Danish, addressing the lack of communication tailored to kids and teens.
Additionally, funds helped support the project management, communication equipment, materials, events, and travel efforts of Coding Pirates. Coding Pirates also plans to partner with Danish app Flimmer, a child-safe media platform, to promote safe engagement for teens through peer-to-peer content. Through this partnership, around 1,000 children will communicate through new and existing channels.
In 2025, Coding Pirates will continue establishing local clubs in Høje-Taastrup and Køge and produce engaging content to further reach its goal of a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive in a digital world.
