Boyd Farms datacenter construction update

Microsoft is constructing the Boyd Farms datacenter. The datacenter construction site is located off Zeb Haynes Road in Maiden, North Carolina.

Why datacenters are needed

Datacenters provide the physical infrastructure for the technology we depend on at work and in our personal lives. Whenever you open an app on your phone, join a virtual classroom or meeting, snap and save photos, or play a game with your friends online, you are using a datacenter. Local businesses, government, hospitals, and schools rely on datacenters every day to deliver goods and services to you.

Construction update May 2026

Microsoft continues construction at the Boyd Farm datacenter site, with crews making steady progress across building foundations, underground utilities, and infrastructure installation. The general contractor for this site changed to Clark Construction.

  • Crews are advancing electrical, underground utility, and slab work, with the first slab pour planned for early June.
  • South entrance utilities—including sewer, stormwater, water, and fire protection—are nearing completion.
  • Campus-wide underground utility work continues through July, with electrical vault installation planned from early June through mid-August.
  • Telecommunications and medium-voltage infrastructure work continues in future development areas into late summer.

Rock removal update

  • Testing to understand underground rock conditions is complete, and teams are reviewing the results to plan next steps.
  • Additional work may be needed to remove rock in certain areas, and this request is currently under review.
  • If approved, crews may use controlled blasting to safely break apart underground rock as part of site preparation. This work will follow all safety requirements, and neighbors will be notified in advance.
  • Rock removal activities, including breaking, removing, and filling areas, are expected to take about 2–3 months once work begins.

Construction timeline

Datacenter construction began April 1, 2024. The general contractor Morgan Construction Company is preparing the site by clearing and grading it. From there they will move into excavation work and continue construction through the spring of 2025.

Together with our general contractor Morgan Construction Company, we will keep neighbors informed in advance of construction work.
