Kirkkonummi datacenter project updates

Microsoft is planning to build a new datacenter region in Southern Finland. The investment decision is based on the accelerating demand for sustainable solutions for high performance data processing solutions across Microsoft services in our country.

The introduction of new Finnish datacenters will help accelerating sustainable digital transformation and providing large scale carbon free district heating.

Join us for an information session on the construction of the Microsoft Kirkkonummi datacenter

The construction of Microsoft’s Kirkkonummi datacenter has begun and we invite you to come and hear about the current status of the project from our project team. During this information session, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the Kirkkonummi datacenter and our commitment to working with the Kirkkonummi community. Our general contractor Destia will share information on its plans for the coming months and take questions you may have.

Datacenters provide the physical infrastructure for the technology we rely on at work and in our personal lives. Whenever you open an app on your phone, join a virtual class or meeting, snap and save photos, or play a game with your friends online, you’re using a datacenter. Local businesses, governments, hospitals and schools rely on datacenters every day to provide you with goods and services.

When: Thursday, 14 November 2024, 17:00 – 19:00

Where: Kartanonranta School, Kartanonkuja 1, 02450 Kirkkonummi

Earthworks in Microsoft Kirkkonummi datacenter site has begun

Destia has started the construction of Microsoft’s Kirkkonummi datacenter project. Earthworks will last until late 2026. The initial work includes the construction of site roads and site water management systems, fencing of the work area and the establishment of a site office.

Working hours will be in line with local law. There is a separate schedule for noisy work, which is communicated to nearby residents on a property-specific basis before it begins.

Construction site traffic will run south from the plot along Sundsbergintie to the Länsiväylä (Kt 51) interchange. Heavy traffic is not directed to Masala.

Entering the construction site and being in the vicinity of machinery is strictly prohibited.

The project has its own website, where you can find more information, including project announcements and schedules: www.destia.fi/kirkkonummidc

If you have questions about construction, please contact Destia on kirkkonummidc@destia.fi

Construction of power lines for the Kirkkonummi datacenter has begun

Destia has been selected as the main contractor for the cable connection works.

Earthworks has begun to prepare the site for cable installation. The estimated duration is September 2024 through early 2027.

Regular working hours will be Mon-Fri 7.00-20.00 and Sat 7.30-17.00. Any noise-causing work will be performed in compliance with local regulations.

Destia will work directly with nearby residents to notify them of noisy works.

Safety is a priority for both Microsoft and Destia. For questions or feedback related to construction, please contact, kaapeliurakka110@destia.fi or kaapeliurakka400@destia.fi.

EIA public presentations for the Finland datacenter sites have been completed

As a part of the Environmental Impact Assessment, Microsoft’s experts held public presentation in each of the three datacenter sites: Espoo in May 2023, Vihti in June 2023 and Kirkkonummi in August 2023. The public presentations have now been completed.

In all three public presentations, Microsoft gave an overview of the projects, presented the EIA Scoping Document and answered questions. Thank you for all who participated in the events and contributed and to everyone who gave an input to the EIA process.

The Environmental Impact Assessment Procedure is currently ongoing and a public presentation of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report for each site will be held next year.

Join us on 15 August 2023 for a public presentation of the Microsoft Kirkkonummi datacenter project’s environmental impact assessment (EIA) program

Datacenters provide the physical infrastructure for the technology we depend on at work and in our personal lives. Whenever you open an app on your phone, join a virtual classroom or meeting, snap and save photos, or play a game with your friends online, you are using a datacenter. Local businesses, government, hospitals, and schools rely on datacenters every day to deliver you goods and services.

The Microsoft datacenter project in Kirkkonummi is starting an environmental impact assessment (EIA). As a part of this, Microsoft has submitted an EIA program to the Uusimaa-area ELY Centre. Together with the ELY Centre, Microsoft will present the EIA program and give an overview of the Kirkkonummi project.

Participants are welcome to bring questions about the project.

In a unique collaboration with Fortum Corporation, the heat generated by the datacenters will be reused and converted to district heating, serving the cities of Espoo and Kauniainen, and the municipality of Kirkkonummi. This will be one of the world’s largest schemes to recycle waste heat from data centers, serving Finland’s second largest city and its neighboring communities.

The waste heat recycled for district heating, along with other measures, will support the City of Espoo and the neighboring communities to reach their ambitious CO2 emission reduction targets, leading among other things to decommissioning of Fortum’s last coal-fired heat unit in Espoo and paving the way for more sustainable energy.

The cloud is an engine that powers our daily lives. From remote work to online shopping, we increasingly depend on cloud computing.  Hundreds of Microsoft datacenters around the world facilitate that activity, storing and managing data with sophisticated physical and logical security measures that control who and what has access to the cloud. Take a virtual step inside a datacenter to learn how the Microsoft Cloud works.

Where can we find more detailed information?

We will be sharing more information on the timeline and process regarding the construction and development of the Finnish datacenters on this website, please visit back later to learn more.

Meanwhile, we encourage you to take a look at the fact sheets and FAQ we have gathered to answer your most urgent questions.
