Microsoft is planning to build a new datacenter region in Southern Finland. The investment decision is based on the accelerating demand for sustainable solutions for high performance data processing solutions across Microsoft services in our country.
The introduction of new Finnish datacenters will help accelerating sustainable digital transformation and providing large scale carbon free district heating.
EIA public presentations for the Finland datacenter sites have been completed
As a part of the Environmental Impact Assessment, Microsoft’s experts held public presentation in each of the three datacenter sites: Espoo in May 2023, Vihti in June 2023 and Kirkkonummi in August 2023. The public presentations have now been completed.
In all three public presentations, Microsoft gave an overview of the projects, presented the EIA Scoping Document and answered questions. Thank you for all who participated in the events and contributed and to everyone who gave an input to the EIA process.
The Environmental Impact Assessment Procedure is currently ongoing and a public presentation of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report for each site will be held next year.

Datacenters provide the physical infrastructure for the technology we depend on at work and in our personal lives. Whenever you open an app on your phone, join a virtual classroom or meeting, snap and save photos, or play a game with your friends online, you are using a datacenter. Local businesses, government, hospitals, and schools rely on datacenters every day to deliver you goods and services.
The Microsoft datacenter project in Kirkkonummi is starting an environmental impact assessment (EIA). As a part of this, Microsoft has submitted an EIA program to the Uusimaa-area ELY Centre. Together with the ELY Centre, Microsoft will present the EIA program and give an overview of the Kirkkonummi project.
Participants are welcome to bring questions about the project.

Microsoft is planning to build a new datacenter region in Southern Finland. The investment decision is based on the accelerating demand for sustainable solutions for high performance data processing solutions across Microsoft services in our country.
The introduction of new Finnish datacenters will help accelerating sustainable digital transformation and providing large scale carbon free district heating.
In a unique collaboration with Fortum Corporation, the heat generated by the datacenters will be reused and converted to district heating, serving the cities of Espoo and Kauniainen, and the municipality of Kirkkonummi. This will be one of the world’s largest schemes to recycle waste heat from data centers, serving Finland’s second largest city and its neighboring communities.
The waste heat recycled for district heating, along with other measures, will support the City of Espoo and the neighboring communities to reach their ambitious CO2 emission reduction targets, leading among other things to decommissioning of Fortum’s last coal-fired heat unit in Espoo and paving the way for more sustainable energy.
