Station Road datacenter project overview

Microsoft began construction for the Station Road Datacenter. The Datacenter construction site is located on Station Road in Seven Hills, Western Sydney.

Why datacenters are needed

Datacenters provide the physical infrastructure for the technology we depend on at work and in our personal lives. Whenever you open an app on your phone, join a virtual classroom or meeting, snap and save photos, or play a game with your friends online, you are using a Datacenter. Local businesses, government, hospitals, and schools rely on Datacenters every day to deliver goods and services to you.

Building Two

Progress on constructing building two has notably progressed, with the majority of work on the structure, roofing, and façade nearing completion. Crews are now focused on installing key equipment and infrastructure as well as getting the surrounding areas ready for final paving operations.

Most of the essential temporary structures that were erected to aid in construction, such as scaffolding, builders’ hoists, and landing platforms, have been predominantly dismantled and cleared from the site.

Building One

Construction of Building One is complete. Building fit-out work is underway.

Building Two

Construction works began on Building Two in July, with groundwork and site foundations completed and focus now shifting to erecting the building’s primary structure. To facilitate these works, an additional tower crane and hoists have been installed.

In the coming months, construction on the external building framework will continue and works will begin on the building façade and the internal fit-out.

Station Road construction update

The project progresses to two significant milestones this month for the development of the Station Road datacenter.

Building One advances to completion

The external construction of the first datacenter building, including the car park, walkways, and landscaping surrounding the area, is progressing to completion. The works are expected to be completed in the coming months.

Work begins on Building Two

An exciting project milestone was reached as the General Contractor, Taylor Construction (Taylor), initiated work on the second building for Station Road.

The initial focus for the work on site is piling and excavation activities. Vibration monitors have been placed on site and near neighbours’ homes. Taylor continues to monitor the noise and vibrations generated during these activities, so they remain within acceptable and permitted levels.

An independent acoustic consultant has been engaged to conduct an assessment. It concluded that the vibrations are, and continue to be, well below acceptable levels indicated in the Noise and Vibration Management Plan approved by Blacktown Council.

Taylor will continue to liaise with neighbours to provide early notice of vibration works.

Building One

The general contractor FDC Construction (NSW) Pty Ltd (FDC) is currently progressing the construction of the first of the two datacenter buildings on site, with the construction estimated to be completed by July 2023. Completion of construction does not indicate datacenter operation/availability.

With major structural works completed on the building, crews on site have been focusing on the internal buildout and the landscaping around the building. To ensure availability of parking by the construction site, contractors are not permitted to park along McCoy Street.  A traffic controller is enforcing this daily.

FDC continues to liaise with neighbours to provide early notice of disruptive works and ensure compliance with the Noise & Vibration Management Plan approved by the Blacktown Council.

We thank the community for their patience and understanding as we complete this work.

Building Two

The general contractor Taylor Construction Group Pty Ltd (Taylor) will start works on the second datacenter building in June 2023. Datacenter construction is expected to be completed by late 2024. Completion of construction does not indicate datacenter operation/availability.

Traffic control managers will be stationed daily at the entrance of the site on Station Road to help ensure that traffic flow is maintained and that public parking near the site remains accessible for local residents and businesses.

Together with FDC and Taylor, Microsoft is committed to keeping the Seven Hills community informed.
