Introducing Rolando M. Rodriguez Herrera

Datacenter Technician Intern

San Antonio, Texas

Employee since 2024

Early days

Rolando was born in Mexico, where he spent the early years of his life. His family immigrated to the United States when he was in fifth grade, and he has lived here ever since. Ever since childhood he has had a fascination for all things electronic, like video games, computers, and radios. Rolando has always been curious about how things work.

The path to technology

From the moment Rolando graduated high school he has been working. At one point he was working three jobs and trying to go to school while also providing for his younger brother and sister. He was stretched so thin that one thing had to give, and at the time that was school. Rolando worked in the customer service industry for about 15 years, started a family, and then felt stuck. He decided to go back to school and pursue his passions. Rolando recently graduated with his Associates in Cyber Defense and Operations, and through Palo Alto College he was able to get an internship working as a datacenter technician at Microsoft. He is currently working on getting his Bachelors and several other certifications.

Superpowers

One of Rolando’s superpowers is his endless curiosity. Because he’s also wanted to know how things work, he tends to ask a lot of questions and every time he does, he learns something new. “Often times not only do I learn something new, but the people around me get to see a different point of view that they might not have thought of,” Rolando said.

A day in the life

As a datacenter technician, Rolando begins his day with a morning meeting where his team reviews the work for the day, talks about past problems or lessons learned, and safety. Then comes the fun part: getting to work! One of Rolando’s favorite tasks is general investigation, where he troubleshoots the server in order to find out what is wrong and then fixes it.

Favorite childhood food

Rolando’s all-time favorite childhood/adult food is mole. “I can picture my grandmother spending an entire day making the mole and I’d be patiently waiting for it to be ready,” Rolando said. “She would spoil me and make me chicken mole tamales which to this day are my most treasured memory.”
