Chinchwad datacenter construction overview

November 22, 2022

Microsoft will begin construction for the Chinchwad datacenter in late 2022. The datacenter construction site is in the Chinchwad neighborhood, northwestern Pune, in the state of Maharashtra, India.

Why datacenters are needed

Datacenters provide the physical infrastructure for the technology we depend on at work and in our personal lives. Whenever you open an app on your phone, join a virtual classroom or meeting, snap and save photos, or play a game with your friends online, you are using a datacenter. Local businesses, government, hospitals, and schools rely on datacenters every day to deliver goods and services to you.

Construction timeline

Datacenter construction will begin near the end of 2022. The general contractor, Fluor Daniel, will prepare the site and construct the facilities at the Chinchwad site.

Together with Fluor Daniel, we will keep neighbors informed in advance of construction work and perform work at less disruptive times when possible (after hours in industrial areas and during daytime hours in residential areas).

Also, we will follow the applicable regulations and comply with our Environmental Clearance Certificate and Consent for Establishment approval conditions per the Government of India Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate. We will also align to local guidelines for best practices in construction and verify that our contractors’ Environmental Clearance (EC) captures the appropriate cleanup and reinstatement expectations.
